My
friends, neighbors and concerned citizens, a sincere and hearty
welcome to my website.I would like to introduce
myself and my way of thinking to you, and I hope to demonstrate,
before this election is over, that Inglewood needs fresh, new ideas
- ideas that will create a bright new future for our City. I
am the person whose ideas can ring in a new era of cooperation,
communication and consensus building for Inglewood. I believer
I can proudly speak for our beautiful City, having lived here for
over 30 years. Above all, I will be accessible and totally
accountable to the residents of Inglewood's District 1.
I'll get back to this, but
first a few words about my background. I was born in North
Carolina and raised in Philadelphia. After graduating from
journalism school I started by professional career as a freelance
writer. I moved to Los Angeles and became a reporter to
Billboard Magazine, the music industry's largest trade publication.
This was at a time when there were few women reporters at
Billboard, and none in Los Angeles. I must say that it made
working there a daunting task at first, but I was determined and my
determination paid off. I held that job from 1974-1982.
When I left I was Talent Editor.
I opened
Leigh-Hi Industries, a consulting firm, in
1982, which I operated until 1991 when I
established and operated until 1991 when I
established and operated, The Gaming
Academy, an Inglewood-based school designed
to create jobs for our citizens whose
education was funded by grants and
scholarships. We trained and secured
employment for approximately 300
individuals.
I entered
the real estate profession in 2001 and
became s licensed Realtor. My idea was
to take advantage of a booming market to
assist those with little or no savings into
their first homes. In 2005 I was
elected, for the 2006 year, President of the
Women's Council of Realtors, Southwest Los
Angeles Chapter.
Throughout all of this I never forgot my
longstanding desire to serve the public on a
higher level - the political arena. In
2002 I was appointed to the Inglewood
Aviation Commission where I learned more
about our relationship with the Airport.
Subsequently, in 2003, I was appointed to
the Inglewood Planning Commission where I
learned a great deal about how our real
estate is apportioned and used. My
background in real estate is invaluable when
determining land uses, housing,
compatibility, etc.
As your
Councilperson my priority will be to bring
revenue into the City coffers and I want to
turn that revenue into programs that will
help our citizens to grow and thereby help
our city to grow.
I want to
create a system of community meetings and
committees to involve all that can possibly
make Inglewood a better place to live.
I also will use the knowledge I have gained
to ensure homes impacted by airplanes are
soundproofed.
About my
personal life, I am the mother of one
daughter, Gail. Without her this would
be most difficult. My precious mother
lives with me, having moved from
Philadelphia seven years ago. My dad
is deceased. I had two sisters,
Barbara, who lives in Los Angeles, and
Helen, who succumbed to breast cancer.
I was married to James H. Cleaver, deceased.
